Not every single time you come in, or just because the insurance pays for it. But generally, as a first-time patient, we need a reference for where your oral condition is. There is so much that we as dentists cannot see under the gums, under the bone, underneath old fillings, crowns or restorations. It's irresponsible to do any kind of exam without relevant x-rays. Dosage is an issue...we don't want to zap you unnecessarily or too heavily.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
Yes, modern dental x-rays use a very low dose of radiation and are considered safe for most patients.
Our office uses digital x-ray equipment calibrated to deliver the lowest dose needed for a clear, useful image. We only take x-rays when they're clinically necessary, never as a routine add-on just because insurance covers it.
If you have specific concerns about radiation exposure, such as pregnancy or a recent medical scan, let us know before your appointment so we can adjust your care accordingly.
How Often Should You Get Dental X-Rays?
Most patients need x-rays once every 1 to 2 years, though your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your oral health history.
New patients typically need a full set of x-rays so we have a baseline to compare future visits against. After that, we space out x-rays based on your risk for cavities, gum disease, and other conditions, not on a fixed schedule.
What Happens During a Dental X-Ray Appointment?
A dental x-ray appointment is quick, painless, and typically adds only a few minutes to your visit.
Here's what to expect:
- You'll wear a lead apron or thyroid collar for added protection.
- A small sensor or piece of film is placed inside your mouth.
- You'll bite down gently or hold still for a few seconds while the image is captured.
- Your dentist reviews the digital images with you the same day.
