HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST?
This is a question I get a lot. "How long will this filling/crown/root canal/implant last?". It's an important question.
Especially when you are spending the time, physical effort and money on any kind of dental treatment. But unfortunately, no one will be able to give you an accurate answer. The honest answer is "Depends". Why did the tooth need treatment in the first place? If we don't isolate the cause of the damage, and we expect a repair to survive in the same environment it got damaged in the first place, then that is the definition of insanity. We have to change the environment somehow. Because the truth is, dental work..even the best in the world...is second-best to what nature has made.
Factors That Can Affect Dental Work
In general, a few key things factor into how long dental work should last.
1) Taking care of it...brushing, flossing, extra fluoride, grind guards to protect from excessive pressure.
2) How well it's made. The craftsmanship does count for a lot towards longevity.
3) Any oral habits that may damage dental work. Chewing fingernails, grinding, TMJ issues, sugar habits, gum chewing habits, pen chewing, nut cracking, toothpick holding.
4) Maintenance. Regular checkups and cleanings..especially if you are prone to cavities or gum disease. Dentists like to use the analogy of "How long does a car last"? It's a fairly similar answer I suppose.
