Deciding on Dental Implants? Let's Correct Any Misconceptions

Deciding on Dental Implants | Lucio H. Kim, DDS

The purpose of a study published recently in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was to determine how much patients knew about dental implants. Not a lot, it turns out!

Surveys were completed by 100 patients at the Virginia Commonwealth University Dental School; the first group was patients visiting specifically for implants, and the second was those visiting for other dental work.

What You Need to Know about Implants

About 1 in 4 patients said that they had never heard of dental implants and about two-thirds aren’t sure what they are made of. We clearly have a bit of work to do in educating people about dental implants! Here are a couple more misconceptions along with the facts about implants:

Misconception: Implants are a recent innovation
Fact: Many patients are surprised to learn that implants have been in practical use for over 40 years with a proven success rate of about 95%. Millions of people around the world have had their lives changed with dental implants!

Misconception: Implants are made of porcelain
Fact: The implant itself is a tiny post placed surgically in your jaw, and it is made of titanium. This is an understandable mistake, though – the functioning, visible part of the implant is a porcelain restoration.

Misconception: Only an oral surgeon can place implants
Fact: Any dentist who is trained in implantology can perform this procedure in-office. Glendale, CA dentist Dr. Kim Lucio received training in placing dental implants from The International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
