Your Three-Step Oral Hygiene Routine
The following is a basic three-step routine and an outline for excellent oral health. Following these steps will keep your smile healthy AND save you time and money in the long term.
- Brushing – You have heard it a thousand times – brush twice a day. If you want good oral health but haven’t been keeping up with this routine, it’s time to make a change. Cleaning your teeth properly removes plaque, a sticky film that builds up during the day. If you don’t feel you are getting the most out of your brushing, ask your dentist or hygienist to show you the proper technique.
- Flossing – Proper brushing is essential, but it doesn’t do the whole job. Plaque and bacteria take about 24 hours to form between teeth. You must floss once a day to ensure that that you are getting your teeth as clean as you possibly can.
- Professional cleanings – No matter how well you brush and floss at home, it’s not enough. Cleanings with a dental hygienist twice a year pick up where your at-home hygiene leaves off. Plaque that isn’t removed with brushing turns into a hard substance called calculus, or tartar, that must be eliminated by a hygienist using professional instruments.
