If you have had orthodontic treatment, you know that wearing your retainer as instructed is essential. You have invested a lot in your smile, and you’re thrilled with the results, but if you don’t wear your retainer regularly, you risk undoing all the hard work and time you spent to get to this point. Since your retainer spends hours in your mouth, it’s just as important to keep it clean as it is to keep your teeth clean. Plaque and bacteria can collect on a retainer in the same way they collect on your teeth, so it’s essential to keep it clean.

4 Tips for a Clean Retainer

Our goal is to support you throughout the entire orthodontic process, including the retainer phase. We don’t want you to compromise your healthy smile, so here are a few tips that will make it easier to keep your retainer fresh and clean:

  1. Drink plenty of water – Water on its own won’t clean a retainer, but drinking water throughout the day can carry off some of the bacteria.
  2. Remove your retainer before enjoying sugary drinks – Sugar and bacteria affect your retainer just as they affect your teeth, so take the appliance out before eating or drinking.
  3. Brush your retainer when you brush your teeth – The best way to ensure your retainer stays bacteria-free is to make a habit of brushing it when you brush your teeth.
  4. Use a baking soda paste – Baking soda is a convenient and effective disinfectant that controls bacteria without harsh chemicals. Use equal parts baking soda and water to create a paste that you apply to your retainer, and scrub gently with your toothbrush.
