Preventative Dentistry in Glendale CA

Preventative Dentistry | Lucio H. Kim, DDSThe foundation for excellent oral health is preventative care. It’s easier to include routine dental care in your schedule now than run the risk of developing more costly and complicated problems later.

The Importance of Preventative Care

At the dental practice of Lucio H. Kim, DDS, we’re committed to helping you understand the benefits of healthy teeth and gums. Recent research has indicated a direct link between the health of your mouth and your overall health. Poor oral health and chronic gum disease can contribute to serious issues like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and even pregnancy complications.

Your First Visit

The first step is to schedule an appointment for your first visit. Before we begin your exam, Dr. Kim will sit down with you for a face-to-face meeting to talk about your concerns. He’ll start by asking some basic questions to learn about you and your attitude toward your dental treatment.

  • What are your expectations for your dental treatment?
  • Do you have specific goals you’d like to accomplish, or are you mainly interested in keeping your oral health on track?
  • What have been your past experiences with dental care?
  • Do you feel nervous or apprehensive about dental care?

Next, Dr. Kim will do a visual exam, noting any dental work and potential problem areas, including signs of teeth grinding and TMJ. We will take photos and a series of x-rays to see what’s going on inside your teeth and establish a baseline for future treatment.

Since your overall health is important to us, every exam and cleaning includes an oral cancer screening. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer is highly treatable, with a 90% survival rate if caught in its early stages.

It may or may not be possible to do a dental cleaning depending we need to know more about the current condition of your oral health. However, we know you’re busy, so we’ll do our best to get your cleaning done during the first visit.

During your cleaning, our hygienist carefully checks your gums for signs of periodontal disease and makes recommendations based on her findings. If gum disease is present, a basic cleaning may be all that’s needed. Otherwise, we’ll work with you to establish a treatment plan to restore gum health. During your cleaning, we’ll also talk to you about good oral hygiene practices and answer any questions you may have.

If you need to catch up with your dental care, we won’t judge you or lecture you about the current state of your oral health. Our only concern is to help you move forward from this point to improve your overall health and wellness.
